The Scoop: OCC to the Moon🚀

Maybe-not-so-hot take!!! When sub-ultra athletes decide to move up in distance, they will change ultra running as we know it. This last week in Chamonix, we saw lots of incredible performances, BUT what stood out to me the most was the women’s winners. All 3 women’s winners - OCC, CCC and UTMB - were on last years OCC podium. WHAT?

Where did these women line up this year you ask? Toni McCann won CCC almost from the gun in her debut 100K. Katie Schide put on a UTMB master class, winning the race for a second time and breaking Courtney Dauwalter’s course record. Miao Yao improves on her performance from last year and beats the previous OCC course record by almost 16 minutes in a field that saw 8 women dip under the previous course record.

Every year we see that being fast is more and more beneficial no matter the distance. Jim Walmsley’s half marathon PR is 1:04 - you need speed to be able to run the big loop in under 20 hours. Athletes like Anna Gibson (5th at Sierre Zinal claims a 1500 PB of 4:08) and Christian Allen (led the early miles of OCC, 13:34 5K PB) are pushing the limits of sub-ultra running in the US and abroad and are likely to make big splashes in ultra running if they decide to move up.

Toni McCann proved that athletes who focus on “shorter” distances have the tools to be dominant in long races at CCC when she went out hard early to gap the rest of the field and then continued to hang on for the win. We are seeing that speed is not just important for “short” races, but have major implications for the future of ultra running. One could argue that Katie Schide’s incredible UTMB performance this year might be due in part to Western States training (focusing on running economy instead of strength in the mountains) and racing OCC last year. In 2019 Katie ran her first UTMB in 27:22 and this year she came close to breaking 22 hour barrier. Incredible!

These women have shown us that training blocks for different races can help you be more successful in your main focus. Whether you are a sub-ultra athlete looking to be stronger or an ultra athlete wanting to add more speed, growing your toolbox is always the move. On the way to your next ultra, maybe it would be worth considering some shorter or faster races.🤔

For this edition of Sub Hub Stories, we had the privilege of sitting down with one of the most dominant forces in women’s trail running today, Miao Yao, fresh off her victory at the 2024 OCC. Known for her aggressive downhill running and tactical racing, Miao has been on our radar since her incredible performance at CCC in 2018, and she’s only gotten stronger since.

In our conversation, Miao opens up about her preparation, the key adjustments she made from last year, the challenges she faced during the race, and more!

1. What are the differences in your preparation for OCC this year compared to last year?

今年你为 OCC 做的准备与去年相比有哪些不同? 答:训练模式有了很大的改变,我的教练为我出了更多针对性的训练计划,主要对我爬坡速度和耐力做了针对性训练,比如我8月的训练量600公里,累计爬升达到了20000米,这些训练可以提升我在短距离中的竞争力。

My training approach has changed significantly. My coach provided more targeted training plans, mainly focusing on improving my climbing speed and endurance. For example, in August, I trained 600 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 20,000 meters. These workouts are meant to enhance my competitiveness in shorter distances.

2. What did you learn from last year's race, and how did you improve to achieve victory this year?

从去年的比赛中你学到了什么,并在今年的比赛中改进以取得胜利? 答:赛前比赛策略和补给计划不够细致,导致前半程跑太快体能过度消耗。今年赛前与教练按补给点和以及比赛路况分段,规划好比赛战略,并预先准备了各种可能发生情况的应对策略;所以在体能分配和在能量补给上都做了很好的准备,而且在比赛中严格执行了比赛策略。

Last year, my race strategy and nutrition plan weren't detailed enough, which led me to run too fast in the first half and exhaust my energy. This year, my coach and I planned the race strategy based on the aid stations and course conditions. We also prepared contingency plans for various possible situations. So, I was well-prepared for energy distribution and nutrition, and I strictly followed the race strategy.

3. You've won both CCC and OCC. Will you try UTMB again, or will you stick to shorter distances?

I might consider participating in the UTMB category after I turn 30 or maybe 35, but I will stick to shorter races for the next few years.

4. Who is in your support team this year, and how did they influence your victory at OCC?

My team includes my sponsors—Salomon provided me with the latest race gear, M-Action provided nutritional support, and Suunto (watch) and iFit (treadmill) gave me technical support based on my training data. They did their best to meet all my training needs. Of course, my coach and my fiancé also played key roles, developing training plans, race strategies, and helping with recovery, all of which allowed me to succeed in such a competitive race. 

5. What was the most challenging part of the race for you, and how did you push through?

答:当天的炎热的天气对我来说也是一个巨大的挑战,不过我们在赛前的准备中已经预料到了这个情况,所以提前做了准备,比如在补给站尽可能用水龙头给身体降温,带了臂套沾水也可以降温。此外我们还增大了水的补充,以及将更多的电解质浓缩液加入补给,事实证明这些准备很奏效,我并没有受到太多高温天气的影响。 

The heat on race day was a huge challenge for me. However, we anticipated this during preparation, so we planned accordingly. For example, I used water taps at aid stations to cool my body, wore arm sleeves that could be soaked in water to help cool down, increased my water intake, and added more electrolyte concentrates to my nutrition. These preparations were effective, and I wasn’t too affected by the heat. 7. What advice would you give to other athletes looking to excel in high-level races like OCC?  

Performance in any race is determined by the hundreds of days of training beforehand. I would advise athletes to tailor their training based on the actual conditions of the race. Don’t put too much pressure on your body, listen to it, and progress step by step. Most importantly, stay healthy and maintain consistent training.

6. Last but not least, what is your favorite French food?

Trail Training Tip

🔥When race day is hot, stay cool with these three sizzling tips:

  1. Buff Up: Keep a buff or bandana handy—wet it down and use it to chill your skin and head.

  2. Electrolyte Elixir: Spice up your water with electrolytes or sodium additives. Your body will thank you, and you’ll stay hydrated and energized.

  3. Breezy Feet: Slip into breathable, sweat-wicking socks to keep blisters and hot spots at bay.

Sub-Ultra Athletes of the Month

As we waved goodbye to 2023, we cooked up a plan for future years: ending the year with a bang by handpicking our top ten Sub-Ultra athletes. But hey, why wait until December to start the celebration? Every month, we're spotlighting athletes whose performances have dazzled, impressed, or just put a big grin on our faces. So while it might not be a perfect match for our 2024 list, it's sure to sprinkle some fun along the way!

Antonio Martinez Perez

Our Athlete of the Month is Antonio Martínez Pérez, who clinched a third-place finish at this years OCC. After a tough debut in 2021 that ended in a DNF, Antonio has never looked back, securing podium spots EVERY year since. He placed second on this course in 2022 and third last year, making him one of the most consistent performers at the OCC. And the ONLY runner to podium in the last three years.

In this year’s race, Antonio made a bold surge on the Col de Balme climb, pushing into second place behind Eli Hemming. Though Francesco Puppi overtook him on the final climb, Antonio finished in 5:17:56, continuing his streak of stellar results.

With his history of fast closing splits and podium finishes, Antonio has proven himself to be amongst the best men in the world. Antonio’s improvement over the past two years is remarkable. In 2022, he finished in 5:21:01, but his 3-minute improvement this year demonstrates his growing strength and experience on the course.

Will he return for a 4-peat? 👀

Miao Yao

Our Athlete of the Month is none other than Miao Yao, the 2024 OCC champion. Miao Yao became the first Chinese woman to win this prestigious race at the UTMB Series Finals week, setting a new course record for this version of the course with a remarkable time of 5:54:03. The previous record was 6:10 run by Sheila Aviles in 2022. Her strategy of attacking on the downhills and managing the climbs to perfection paid off, as she surged ahead of a world class field.

Yao’s impressive performance saw her break away on the climb to the Col de Balme and maintain her lead through the final descents. With a six-minute advantage over Wyder at the finish, Miao showed once again why she’s a force to be reckoned with in mountain running.

Already a top finisher at OCC last year and the 2018 CCC winner, Miao continues to showcase her world-class talent. And she has been quoted of having interest in running UTMB again after a DNF in 2019.

Looking Forward

It’s beginning to feel like crunch time in the trail and mountain world. As championship season begins at the end of this month in Chamonix, everyone is starting to feel the heat of training through the summer to get ready to rip.

September brings a wave of exciting races across the globe. On September 13-14, the Wildstrubel by UTMB takes place in Adelboden, Switzerland. This event is sure to challenge runners with its stunning Alpine terrain. There is also prize money up for grabs.

The Golden Trail World Series continues to heat up with two major races. The Headlands 27K, featuring iconic Marin County trails, will be held on September 14-15. Just minutes from San Francisco, this race offers a thrilling mix of technical terrain and breathtaking views. Then, on September 22, the Mammoth Trail Fest kicks off, featuring a challenging single-loop course around Mammoth Mountain. Directed by ultra legend Tim Tollefson, it's set to be the grand finale for the Golden Trail World Series. Expect significant shifts in the rankings as athletes give their all in these final events.

Meanwhile, in Big Sky, Montana, the RUT takes place on September 14-15, featuring VK, 28K, and 50K options. Known for its steep, technical terrain and breathtaking views, it’s a must for mountain endurance athletes.

On September 21-22, the iconic Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon take center stage. Both races climb the historic Barr Trail to the summit of Pikes Peak, offering a true test of mountain endurance. The Ascent covers 13.3 miles with a vertical gain of 7,800 feet, while the Marathon adds a grueling descent, totaling 26.2 miles of intense climbing and descending. No longer a Golden Trail World Series race which domestic racers will take a shot at Remi Bonnet’s newly minted Ascent record? 👀

Additionally, the September 20 calendar is packed with intriguing races: Grindstone by UTMB in Natural Chimneys Park, USA; Paraty by UTMB in Paraty, Brazil; and the Julian Alps Trail Run by UTMB in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. All beautiful races offering up the opportunity for folks to collect UTMB stones.

Closing out the month on September 28, the Icebug Birkie Trail Run hosts the USATF MUT Marathon Trail Championship. Held in the iconic American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation trails, this event is known for its relentless grassy hills. In the past few years Moab has hosted the Marathon Trail Champs but this year Birkie has the honor.

The season clearly is not slowing down and we are here for it! 🔥
